The World Health Organization (WHO) approves Chinese Sinopharm vaccine for Emergency Use Listing (EUL)

The Chinese vaccine Sinopharm from Beijing Institute of Biological Products  (known as SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine [Vero Cell]) has been approved for the World Health Organization’s Emergency Use Listing (EUL).  | 国药集团北京生物制品研究所新型冠状病毒灭活疫苗(Vero细胞)被接纳世界卫生组织的紧急使用清单。

To qualify for the Emergency Use Listing, WHO checks the vaccines quality, safety, efficiency as well sustainability in regard to distribution. 

The report given by WHO is very promising. Key points include:
  • An onsite inspection of production facility was conducted. 
  • This is the first vaccine that contains a small sticker on each vile that would change color if the vaccine is exposed to heat, providing confirmation to the health workers administering vaccines that it can still be used safely. 
  • Efficacy for symptomatic and hospitalized patients was 79%.
